Quality sleep is critical for a balanced mindset, emotional stability, and optimized performance. It sets you up for a successful tomorrow. However, sleep is often deprioritized and interrupted by our preoccupied and distracting patterns of thoughts. There’s nothing noble about depriving oneself of the necessary rest that the body needs to recharge itself. To honor our uniqueness though, it’s important to realize that our natural sleep patterns, cycles, and duration differ from one another. Therefore, what we each need to prepare our body to go into rest mode and stay asleep will vary from person to person. The ULT Assessment is an insightful tool for revealing ideal sleep cycles. Personal development and life improvements must include an evaluation of sleep habits.

Here are some recommendations for getting yourself ready for a restful sleep.

  1. Do your best to create a sleep schedule: Set a time that you’d like to fall asleep (notice, I didn’t say go to bed.) Check out “The Natural Sleeper.”
  2. Keep your dinners light and easily digestible: A heavy dinner, especially less than 3 hours before your sleep time will naturally interfere with a calm body ready to rest. This is a general rule of thumb. Consult with your nutritionist or naturopath for the best food plan for your body.
  3. Start winding down 60-minutes before sleep time: It’s important to train your brain that it’s time to be less alert and move to a calmer and peaceful headspace. Leave those serious and triggering conversations for earlier in the day.
  4. Allow some time to practice yoga, meditation, and breath work: Here’s 20 minutes of gentle yoga and breathing techniques by Yoga with Adriene. She takes you through a step-by-step process to reduce the tension in the body and calm the nervous system for a relaxing sleep.
  5. Dim the lights, turn off the TV, limit your cell phone usage, and listen to some relaxing music: This is a very important step to incorporate in your new nightly ritual.
